Demand for Styrene
A leading manufacturer of petrochemicals and fertilisers in the country wished to study the market for styrene. The main objective of the study was to estimate the demand for styrene arising from styrene based polymers so that plant capacity for styrene could be estimated.
The study had 3 major components viz. Desk research, Survey among manufacturers of styrene based polymers and Survey among major end-users of polymers of styrene. The polymers of styrene covered were polystyrene (GPPS, HIPS, EPS), ABS, SAN, SBR and SB latex. The survey covered major user industries like packaging, television, refrigerator, tyres and automotive components, etc. The survey also covered potential user industries such as audio and video cassette components, etc. This all-India study gave estimates of requirements arising from each end-user industry and a consolidated market size for styrene. It also estimated growth rates to enable forecast of future demand.
A large manufacturer of chemicals wanted to study the market for TDI & MDI, which are major raw materials used in the manufacture of polyurethane. The main objective was to estimate their demand. The ultimate purpose of the study was to determine the feasibility of future diversification plans.
The study consisted of four components i.e. Desk research, study among engineering consultants, study among manufacturers of polyurethanes and study among users of polyurethane. Since the demand for TDI/MDI is highly dependent on the consumption of polyurethanes, both manufacturers and users of polyurethanes were studied. The demand for polyurethanes was estimated using the norms of consumption for different user segments and from this the demand for TDI/MDI was determined.
This study conducted in 1996-97 studied the Polystyrene market in light of the changes sweeping the Indian Economy and the price fluctuations which have become norm The study estimated the total demand for PS in India till 2002-03. The study had 3 major components viz. Desk research, Survey among manufacturers of Polystyrene and Survey among major end-users of PS.
This all-India study gave estimates of requirements arising from each end-user industry and a consolidated market size for PS. It also estimated growth rates to enable forecast of future demand.
This study conducted in 1996-97 studied the PU foam mattress market in India. Most Indian manufacturers brought out mattresses made of Jute and cotton and the PU foam mattress was a relative newcomer. The study estimated the total demand for PU foam mattresses in India till 2002-03. The study had 3 major components viz, Desk research, Survey among manufacturers of PU foam mattresses and Survey among trade segment.
This all-India study gave estimates of the whole mattress market, the shares of various types of mattresses, the price consciousness and price sensitivity. It also estimated growth rates and forecast future demand by material for mattresses.

A leading manufacturer of ceramic insulators for electrical applications wished to diversify into this venture. The study involved estimation of demand arising from existing applications such as catalytic carriers in petrochemical industry. The study also assessed the likely level of acceptance in industries like textile, pump, welding equipment etc., where other materials were being used.
This study covered key persons involved in selection of materials and also in production from among the potential user industries. They were shown the material and its properties, advantages and disadvantages over other materials were also explained. Their reactions were recorded to estimate the level of acceptance and likely degree of substitution.
Trimellitic Anhydride is a new chemical which is used increasingly in large quantities for certain type of paints in the developed countries. The client wanted to study its applications in India.
The study involved coverage of paint manufacturers to assess their awareness, laboratory usage, likely intention to switch etc. This gave an indication of the acceptability of the product and its market potential.
The client a large scale manufacturer of industrial chemicals and petrochemicals wished to study the prevailing perception among his customers regarding the products and services offered by them.
The study involved interviews with the customers spread all over India, to determine their perceptions on factors like timely delivery, promptness in order processing, complaint redressal, etc. The competitors were also evaluated on the same set of parameters in order to obtain a comparative picture.
A large manufacturer of linear alkyl benzene (LAB) wished to find out if his brand had a premium image, and to identify the price premium the brand could command over other brands. This was accomplished through a Brand Price Trade-Off (BPTO) exercise.
The BPTO exercise gives an indication of the maximum premium a brand could command and the likely market shares for various brands at different combinations of prices for the brands. IMRB could clearly establish the extent of premium their client could command for their product (LAB).
A large manufacturer of petroleum products wished to monitor the lube oil market. The principle objectives were to study the trade practices of the new lube oil companies in terms of margins, discounts offered, payment terms, special incentives, sales/POP support etc. and to ascertain the ordering and delivery practices among different members of the distribution channel.
The study involved detailed interviews with the various members of the distribution chain comprising dealers, sub-dealers, C&F; agents, stockists / depots, etc. |
